Connected locally and across the globe
Mothers' Union is a worldwide group of the Anglican Church connected across 84 countries that supports families and communities. Care is given regardless of faith background, raising funds and supporting the development of skills that enable people to flourish. St Michael's Mothers' Union group is part of MU Diocese of Melbourne and linked with others across the diocese.
Our Mothers' Union group normally meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 1.30pm. Email to connect with St Michael's Mothers' Union.
It was very appropriate that we were able to invite Derek and Rosemary Snibson to MU during NAIDOC Week. We heard of the different lives that Rosemary and Derek are living amongst the Darwin aboriginal people as they share God’s love and learn each other’s ways. Derek is holding a Creole Bible and told us that Bible passages in local languages are being translated and recorded as apps for mobile phone users who are illiterate in their mother tongue. What an amalgam of ancient and modern!
At our MU meeting in May, we heard about the work of Anglican Overseas Aid in Melanesia with our emphasis on Vanuatu. In the South Pacific, Vanuatu is a nation of 83 separate islands. Its economy is supported by agriculture and tourism, and the main faith is Christianity. There are many challenges: We learnt that Vanuatu has been labelled as the most vulnerable place on earth for natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, tropical cyclones, tsunamis, flooding and landslides, all occurring in increasing intensity and frequency due to global warming. Rising sea levels are also a threat.
Pivotal work is being done by MU-trained women and we learned of the strength of MU in Vanuatu and other islands. Domestic violence and positive parenting are areas where strong support is needed and being offered.

Mary Sumner Day
In August we unite with Mothers' Union groups across the globe for a worship service and to celebrate our founder, Mary Sumner. Last year virtual worship was led from the Blackburn Diocese in Lancashire, England, with the theme of Building Hope and Confidence. Watch the service here.
