Our commitment to child safety
All children who come to St Michael’s have a right to feel safe and be safe. The welfare of the children in our care will always be our priority, and we have zero tolerance for any abuse across all age groups. This Statement of Commitment applies to all staff, volunteers, children and individuals in our parish.
Child safety
St Michael's is committed to the highest standards of safety for our children, teens, volunteers and staff. We strongly condemn any form of abuse and are committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable people. All our staff and people who serve in our church complete training and required checks. We adhere to the safety and screening requirements of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. The Kooyoora Office of Professional Standards administers the Professional Standards Uniform Legislation for the Diocese of Melbourne.
Volunteer Screening
At St Michael's our Parish Council members and all those who work with children undergo screening and training according to their role that is prescribed by the government and our diocese. This may include a Working with Children card, a Police Check (which we are authorised to conduct through CrimCheck in our church office), and one or more of the three levels of online training also mandated by the diocese.
In addition, any parishioner serving in a church activity of any kind is required to read and formally acknowledge the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne's Safe Ministry Code of Conduct, which comprises these documents:
Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
Child Safety and Wellbeing Reporting Procedure
Code of Conduct for Child Safety and Wellbeing
Safe Ministry Policy
For more information, please go to the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne Safe Ministry page.
Child Safe Standards
The Victorian Commission for Children and Young People requires compliance with 11 Child Safe Standards for all organisations that provide services to children, including churches and other religious organisations. Under the auspices of our diocese, St Michael's is committed to complying with these compulsory standards.
